Follow me on on the path to discover the unknown good that is clean-crafted wine!

I’m sure you’ve heard of clean eating, but have you heard of clean WINE? Until about a year and a half ago, I didn’t know this was a thing. If you know me, you know I LOVE wine – and fine wines at that, thanks to my first trip to Napa (face palm) – but what I didn’t love at all was the horrible hangovers drinking wine would give me. Occasionally, I would get an instant headache from even just one glass, which I would credit towards my being a lightweight (who’s with me!?) or probable dehydration. Thankfully, I finally learned just how wrong I was…

That’s right, folks. If you read through this handy chart, you now know the reason you feel like crap after drinking most wines has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the chemicals, sugar, and ingredients being ADDED to those mass-produced wines. Most of those wines you pick up off the grocery store shelves have been loaded with added sugars, added sulfites, pesticides and chemicals, which changes the color, taste and consistency of the wine in an attempt to make it appear higher quality. This is, essentially, making that wine more of a chemistry project, to ensure the same taste is always produced, rather than a real bottle of wine that naturally varies in characteristics with each vintage year based on the ever changing factors that control wine production (i.e. climate, weather, environment, soil, etc.) Furthermore, most wines labeled “organic” doesn’t necessarily mean the wine is clean-crafted. Organic wines just mean that the grapes used to produce the wines were organic, but it doesn’t mean that no chemicals or sugars were added in the wine-making process–so don’t be fooled!
Did you know that real clean-crafted wine doesn’t stain your teeth (or clothes or rugs)? Wine stain is caused by an an ingredient added in mass-produced wines that’s loaded with sugar called mega purple. It is used to “color-correct” the bottle and add a textural element in order to make it appear darker in color or high quality. (Gasp!)
It’s not even just the cheaper or “lower quality” wines that do this. Nope, there are very nice, expensive wines, from well-known wineries that cannot label their wines clean-crafted. I found that out the hard way not too long ago when I opened a very nice $60 bottle I brought back from a winery in Sonoma, drank two small glasses (okay maybeee it was half the bottle), and was up all night with one of the worst migraines/hangovers of my life that lasted well until the next day. Oops.
Which brings me to my next point…”Don’t smoke crack.”
(Are there any “The Waterboy” fans out there who were following me on this quote?!? HAHA. Maybe? No? Bad joke? Okay, on to my real point…
So what exactly is “clean-crafted” wine, and where do you find it?

If you haven’t heard of it already, let me be the first to introduce you to the one and only company that delivers clean-crafted wines straight to your door step – your new love affair. This company was started in Dallas in 2017 by Sarah Shadonix, Attorney and Level 3 Sommelier, who travels around the world and personally selects your clean-crafted wine from wineries who produce their wine the right way (basically, my dream job). These are usually smaller, family-owned Mom & Pop type wineries, from countries all over the world, that believe quality is better than quantity. As mentioned in the diagram above, these wines are produced from hand-picked, organic grapes that have ZERO pesticides, ZERO added sugars (only about 1-3 grams of sugar PER BOTTLE for reds and slightly higher for whites due to more residual sugar in those grapes), ZERO added sulfites, and NONE of the 250 chemicals/ingredients usually added to mass-produced wines.

So, how do we know for sure that these wines are clean-crafted? Glad you asked! Each wine that is hand-selected and available to purchase through the website is lab-tested to ensure it is 100% clean, and anything that fails or falls short of that will never be distributed on the site. That means these wines are all organic, biodynamic, vegan, paleo, and keto friendly. How amazing is that?! You can rest easy and most likely hangover-free, if you’re like me, knowing that you don’t have to worry about what’s been put in your wine when you order from this godsend of a company. Plus, I love the fact that small wineries are being supported and are able to showcase their pure and quality wines without having to mass-produce them! And did I mention clean-crafted wines taste 1 MILLION times better than mass-produced wines? Seriously…every bottle tastes like it should be at least $100 (but did I mention some of the wines have been as low as $16 on the site?) The inventory is always changing, so you can continue to try new wines from different vineyards and regions around the world.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I try to drink Scout & Cellar wines as often as I can, but I don’t ONLY drink their wines. Sometimes you need to order a glass of wine at dinner or try out that new wine bar with a friend, am I right?! Want to know my little secret when ordering wines that I’m not sure are 100% clean? Here it is: I usually try to ordering or buying wines that are from a different country! Have you ever gone to Europe (or known someone who has) and realized that you didn’t feel so crappy when you drank wine over there, even though you probably drank way more than you normally do? (Ha!) Well, that’s because other countries tend to have more strict rules and regulations on ingredients that can be added to wines (as well as food and products). Other countries are way less likely to add those extra headache/hangover producing ingredients in your wine, or load it with excess sugar and sulfites. The Old World tends to stick with tradition and the way things have been done for hundreds and hundreds of years (back to quality vs quantity). Ugh, don’t you just love Old World wines – and everything else about the Old World? (*Sigh*)
I’ve been drinking Scout & Cellar wines, as well as and carefully selecting wines from other countries, for the past couple of years now, and I can honestly say I can’t remember the last time I got a bad wine hangover! (Except for when I tried to drink that fancy bottle from Sonoma, or mixed wine with other alcohol – oops!) In case you all are interested, I will be making another blog post about some of my favorite non-Scout & Cellar wines that are spectacular and most likely 100% clean as well! Hellooooo Italian and French wines!
Since I can go on and on and on about this subject, I’m going to end this here before I start losing you! I hope you enjoyed this post, and I was able to bring you a little insight into the world of wine that I enjoy so much. Cheers to you on your journey to discover the unknown good (and still live to tell stories about it the next day)!
